Erastus Bennet Dorris, |
also known as E.B. |
Dorris, was born on July |
6, 1841 in Arkansas. In |
1849, his family moved |
to Texas. |
Twenty years later, |
E.B. enlisted into |
the war. He enlisted as |
a private. He served |
in Company H of |
the 9th Kentucky |
Mounted Infantry |
for 2 years. |
On December 19, 1862, E.B.’s regiment was |
active in and around the Battle of Jackson in |
Madison County. |
The commander was Brig. Gen. Nathan |
Bedford Forrest. |
The Confederates won the victory at |
Jackson. |
In 1863, E.B. Dorris |
was transferred to a |
Texas Troop, |
Company I, |
Regiment 32. |
On December 5, 1864, E.B.’s Texas unit |
participated in the Battle of Murfreesboro. |
This war was also known as Wilkinson Pike and |
Cedars. |
There was an estimation of 422 casualties.
Again, the |
commander was Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. |
The Battle of Murfreesboro ended 2 days later
with a |
Union
victory. |
Some time during the |
war (although he does |
not tell when), E.B. was |
captured at Spanish Ft. |
Florida and was carried |
to Shipp Island as a |
prisoner. He was |
exchanged and finally |
discharged at the close |
of war. |
In 1865, the Civil War |
ended. E.B. was most |
likely proud of what he |
had done for the South. |
He probably would have |
been prouder if the |
Confederates would |
have won. |
11 years after the war |
ended,
E.B. married a |
woman by
the name of |
Emma.
They raised a |
family. They were |
married for 47 years |
until Mr. E.B. Dorris |
passed away at the age |
of 82
years because of |
old age. |
