Daniel S. Handy was born in Shelby County, Indiana on September 3, 1843.

In 1859, when Handy was the age of 16, he attended
    school in Mercer County, Kentucky.
Enlistment
In the spring of 1861 Handy enlisted in Co D 1st TN cavalry Battalion and served with General Breckenridge’s body Guards.
"On September 26,"
On September 26, McNairy 1st TN Cavalry Battalion with, Colonel Rains’ Regiment and Colonel Statham marched for Laurel Bridge, Laurel County Kentucky to break up a camp of Union soldiers variously estimated at from 600 to 1500.

General Braggs ordered Brigadier General John C. Brickinridge to move his troops by rail to Corinth, Mississippi and advised him; “Your wagons and artillery horses will be escorted by McNairy’s battalion to be furnished by General Crittenden”

In July 1863 Handy was taken prisoner and sent to Camp Douglas, where he spent the rest of the war.

Handy attended  school at the university of Michigan at Ann Arbor and then received his degree from Western Reserve university of Cleveland, Ohio in1866.

In the spring of 1871 Handy moved to Erath County and settled on Barton's creek. Then Married Eugenia Steffe.
